Book Excerpt: Carry Me Back

I wrote the music to this song when I was a teenager. The lyrics to this song were always very compelling to me. They seem to be tranquil and evocative at the same time. I can visualize our ancestors living and doing those things described in this song; thus, a feeling for me of “longing for my land of delights.”

The Land of Ham The land is one of the oldest names given to the region in Africa that our ancestors flourished and ruled. Ham is now called Egypt. Our ancestors, the Hamites, are mentioned several times in the Holy Bible. One reference is Holy Bible, 1 Chronicles 4:40, “And they found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceable; for they of Ham had dwelt there of old.”
